THE PRESSURE TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT

One of the most common pieces of manifestation advice is to be specific. Know exactly what you want. Write down every detail. Picture it clearly. Decide how it should look, when it should arrive and perhaps even how it should happen.

And there is some truth in clarity. It can be incredibly helpful to know what matters to you. But I think there is an important difference between being clear and being controlling. Because sometimes we become so focused on the exact picture in our heads that we leave very little room for anything else.

Including something better.

CLARITY DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN EVERY DETAIL

Imagine deciding you want a particular car. You choose the make. The model. The colour. The year. You picture yourself driving it. You imagine it parked outside your home. Perhaps you’ve even saved photographs of it. There’s nothing wrong with that. But underneath all those details, there may be something else you’re actually asking for.

Perhaps you want reliability. Freedom. Comfort. Safety. Enough space for your family. Or simply the feeling of finally owning a car you love. Those things may matter far more than the exact badge on the bonnet. So instead of asking only, “What exactly do I want?”,  I like to also ask, “What is it about this that matters to me?.” That’s a very different kind of clarity.

I once had a very specific picture in my mind – a white SUV. That was what I was creating.

The car that came into my life wasn’t the exact car I’d pictured. It was better.

Had I decided that only the original picture counted, I could easily have looked at what arrived and thought, “That’s not what I asked for.”

But the important parts of what I wanted were there. And more.

It made me realise how easily we can confuse the picture we’ve created with the outcome we’re actually asking for. Sometimes we know exactly what we want, and sometimes we only know what we think it needs to look loke. Those aren’t necessarily the same thing.

SPECIFICITY CAN BECOME A SET OF RULES

There is another problem with believing we must know exactly what we want before we can manifest. What if you don’t? Perhaps you know you want your life to change, but you aren’t sure what the next chapter looks like. Maybe you want a relationship, but you don’t have a twenty-point list describing the person. Maybe you want different work, but you don’t yet know the job title. Maybe you simply know: I don’t want to feel like this anymore. Does that mean you can’t begin until you’ve worked everything out?

I don’t believe so. Sometimes knowing what you want more of is enough.

  • More freedom.

  • More ease.

  • More connection.

  • More purpose.

  • More time.

  • More financial security.

  • More joy.

You don’t necessarily need to know the exact form it will take.

LEAVE SPACE FOR THE “OR BETTER”

This is something I now love about creating.

I can be clear about what I’d like…

without deciding that I know every possible way it could arrive.

There’s a quiet difference between:

It has to be this.

and:

This is what I’d love. I’m open to this — or something better.

The first holds tightly.

The second still has direction, but it leaves the door open.

And sometimes life walks through that door carrying something you hadn’t even thought to ask for.

WHAT IF YOU DON’T KNOW YET?

Perhaps you know you want your life to change, but you aren’t sure what the next chapter looks like. Maybe you simply know, “I don’t want to feel like this anymore.” That’s enough to begin. You might start with:

  • I’d like greater clarity about what I want next.

  • I’m open to discovering what would feel right for me.

  • Show me what’s possible.

You aren’t behind. You aren’t doing manifestation incorrectly. Sometimes clarity comes through the journey, not before it.

For me, this is the part worth remembering. Know what matters to you. Know what you would love to experience. Be willing to name what you want when you know it. And then leave enough space for life to surprise you. Because the outcome you can imagine today is limited by what you already know. What might be possible for you isn’t necessarily limited in the same way.

Be clear about what matters.

Stay open to what arrives.

CARRY THIS WITH YOU

You don’t have to know every detail.
Be clear about what matters.
Stay open to how it arrives.
And leave a little room for something you hadn’t thought to ask for.

Clear. Release. Create.
